Site Spotlight: Guadalajara, Mexico
("ENGAGE" - formerly "UltimateAIM")

Have you ever seen a group of young people when they arrive home from a short-term mission trip? Whether it be one week in Mexico or two weeks in Scotland, you can see the excitement in their faces. Their hearts are overflowing with the love of Christ. Now imagine creating a place for these fresh-minded youth to go and build their skills in missionary work, impacting their lives forever.

Steve ShoopThat's exactly what missionary Steve Shoop has done. For years he watched young adults come and go on short-term mission trips, but wanted something more. Students often return home believing that God has something more for them, but not knowing what to do or where to go. "ENGAGE" is an internship program Shoop created in conjunction with Evangel University, Southwestern Assemblies of God University, and Assemblies of God World Missions.

ENGAGE students live in a dormitory with resident deans in Guadalajara, Mexico for two years. They have the opportunity to gain life skills, both spiritual and practical. After two years, the student will have had the opportunity to earn an AA degree from either of the partnering universities and learn a foreign language. These students will leave Mexico excited and equipped to change the world.

A Friend for Ramon
Ramon's home was a metal and scrap-lumber shack. His father abandoned the family, and his mother worked long hours. Left alone, Ramon wandered the streets. He carried a knife wherever he went and sniffed glue to escape his loneliness. When Ramon entered first grade, he brought his knife and bad habits with him. He threatened his teacher and stole whatever he wanted.

One day, a short-term missionary team came to the school. They had dramas, clowns, puppets and candy. They did a drama about problems at home. Ramon especially liked the puppets. One of the puppet characters felt abandoned. Ramon felt that way too.

After the puppet show, the team talked about Jesus. They asked the children if they wanted to meet Jesus, and Ramon was the first to respond. Ramon's teacher didn't see him go forward, weeping as the team led him in the sinner's prayer.

The next day Ramon approached his teacher and said, "Here is my knife. I don't need it any more. Yesterday I accepted Jesus as my Savior. He will take care of me now."
